What I love about these characters is how fully formed and developed they feel. He tries to keep the peace but even Said's perspective causes conflict - Vinz doesn't like Said's more pro-cop stance and Hubert isn't appreciative of when Said encourages Vinz's arrogance. When Hubert criticises Vinz for carrying the gun in the police station and hospital, Said physically stands between the two in an attempt to stop a potential fight. When Vinz criticises Said for shaking a cop's hand, Said suggests that there are good cops just doing their job, that they're not all corrupt like Vinz believes. Said probably understands the three of them work at their best as a trio united rather than divided. Said is like the goofball of the group, telling crude jokes and even being a bit of a nuisance (he literally steals a hot dog during a rooftop gathering and runs away from the cook), but he also tries to keep the peace between Vinz and Hubert when things become heated between those two. Hubert puts Vinz arm down and punches the cop out of the way, clearly knowing fully well that if Vinz pulled the trigger he'd be in a worse situation than he is right now). He's clearly an intelligent man and tries to keep his cool, recognising Vinz is all bravado and able to assess a situation on the spot (when Vinz is cornered by a cop, Hubert is beside him as Vinz pulls out the gun. Hubert is the breadwinner of his family but due to the lack of financial opportunity and job prospects on the estate, Hubert sells drugs for a secondary income. Hubert is like Vinz's opposite: he owned a gym before it was burnt down during a riot.

He's desperate for a sense of justice similar to an-eye-for-an-eye as well as the status a gun can bring (which is understandable when Vinz feels like he's been pushed around by cops and his friends for not being serious in his brags) but when it comes down to it, Vinz can't walk the walk. Similarly he causes a group of skinheads in Paris to vanish by pulling out the gun, but when faced with the opportunity to take a life of another human being, he fails to do so, turning away and retching. When it comes down to it, Vinz can't do a damn thing which is illustrated during a police chase on foot where Vinz is caught off-guard by a cop: he aims a gun at the cop's head but cannot pull the trigger. Vinz has a violent sense of justice that can only be quenched by revenge, but it's honestly just talking a big game. Vinz, after finding a police gun on the council estate, wishes to kill a cop if his friend Abdel dies in hospital after being incapacitated by a cop during the riots in France at the time.
#La haine characters full
The central trio: Vinz (arrogant, full of bravado), Hubert (the most rational of the trio) and Said (a goofball who tries to keep the peace between Vinz and Hubert) all have different values.

Having re-watched it I feel more connected to why I love it and I have a new admiration for it too. I recently re-watched La Haine, a film I've always loved but, having not seen it in a long time, my memory and reasons why I loved it began to feel quite hazy.
